How does a toe nail grow back.?

I recently lost a big toe nail from an unfortunate incedent. It grew back. How does the body know to turn the skin expsosed into a nail again? How does a toe nail grow back.?
It's not that your body 'knows how to turn the skin exposed into a nail again.' Your body is 'programmed' (- that makes you sound like a robot :() to grow. Nails are just dead cells, and as with skin cells, they grow naturally. Think about it- when you exfoliate, and just every day in general dead skin cells are always coming off, but you still have lots of skin on your body. Also, hair is a dead cell, but when you rip out one piece another one grows in its place.

Nail-growth is done by keratin regrouping and 'reproducing' in the roots of your nail. How does a toe nail grow back.?
Your nails just grow, maybe yours grow slow?

Because I have to constantly cut mine!

it grows from the nailbed (where that pale cresant-looking piece is by your finger?)

and it just grows.

kinda like hair-it's not like a reaction to when it's missing.
ask in the health question-im not sure so thats why i say this :) people there will help you.
