Look for good old solid companies that pay regular dividends. You probably know some in your area. The company that supplies your phone, your power, that sort of thing. If it seems to you like everyone you know is complaining about them don't buy their stock...the whole GM thing is no surprise to me...it seems they've been thumbing their noses at their customers for years and deserve what's happening to them.
I'm Canadian, not sure where you are, but here I like Fortis, Telus, Shopper's Drug Mart, North West Company and Royal Bank. They don't go up and down wildly but there is steady growth and dividends. Of course, they also got hit in the downturn but not like some companies.
