I don't know about repelling dirt but you push the bits of skin just before your nails backwards and that makes them grow faster. And like the person above me said just get a good nail overcoat from, well, pretty much anywhere..

There are clear nail polish nail hardeners available. Try a chemist or large department store with a good nail section.
