can i cut the nail all the way back to where you should ordinarilyDoes the quick in a dogs nail grow as long as the nail does?

it does grow out in proportion to the nail, but the more you let the nail grow out the larger, thicker, longer the quick will become. this makes future trimming mighty difficult.

the only effective amateur home solution I've found to work is the hand held sander that takes the nails down a little at a time, so you can gradually, little at a time, get the nails and quick down to a healthy size.
The quick in the nail will grow along with the nail itself. If the dogs nails are extremely long only cut off a small portion of the nail, wait several days then cut off another small portion. As the nail is cut the quick will recede farther back the nail. Go in small amounts so as not to nick the quick and start the nail to bleed. This is very painful for the dog until the nail grows.
Only cut back TO the quick!, it will bleed and you will hurt the dog, if you trim the nails regular the quick will shrink back, but if they are left too long the quick will grown too and cutting the nails will take a lot longer as it has to be done in stages,It's easlier if two people do the job together.Good Luck...

p.s. If in doubt let the Vet do it ...
The quick will grow out with the nail, so you will have to take it back slowly. You will injure the dog and it will bleed profusely if you cut it back where it's supposed to be after letting it grow too long.
the qukck grows with the nail if it has not been cut in a while...

if this has happenned, you need t cut slowly and little at a time until you reach the quick...

maybe go to a groomer to have the nails done until they are safer foryou to do...
Every dog is different. If the nails are a light color you can see the quick. If the dog has dark nails I would start slowly. Have some quick stop on hand in case you nip it.

I have 9 dogs and a couple of them have very long quicks which means I can trim their nails very little.
